I come from a small island called Santo Antão in Cape Verde, located off the west coast of Africa. Growing up there until I was 15, I experienced a unique blend of mountains, black sand beaches, and rich local traditions. Each of Cape Verde’s ten islands has its own identity, and traveling between them by plane or boat is a wonderful way to discover this diversity. But my path as a model soon took me far beyond my island home.
I have been modeling for almost ten years now, and my journey began unexpectedly. I was discovered at school on my island and encouraged to enter the "Elite Model Look" competition, which I won. That victory opened the door to international modeling opportunities, from China to Europe, and eventually to New York, where I now spend most of my time. Working with top designers like Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger, Victoria’s Secret, and La Perla has been life-changing. Walking in shows for Victoria’s Secret or the Chanel show in Cuba were unforgettable highlights, moments that only a model can fully appreciate.
The fashion industry has surprised me in many ways. Leaving my family at 15, learning new languages, traveling the world, and discovering completely different cultures was overwhelming but also exhilarating. Many aspiring models do not realize the dedication required behind the scenes: long hours, jet lag, countless castings, and the constant effort to look fresh and professional. Success in modeling often depends not just on looks, but on passion, perseverance, and the support of a good model agency. The guidance of my agents and my family has been invaluable in helping me navigate this complex industry.
Over the years, I have learned more than I ever imagined. Modeling has taught me responsibility, communication, and the importance of respecting everyone in this diverse industry. I have also discovered my inner strength and my ability to contribute to causes larger than myself, like helping families in Cape Verde through food donations. These experiences remind me that life is about both achieving your dreams and making a positive impact on the world.
I admire models like Gisele Bündchen, who, like me, left a small hometown to pursue a career that could change her life and support her family. For young models entering the industry, my advice is to stay true to yourself, remain determined, and fight for what you want—even in the face of challenges. A good model agency can guide you, but your passion and dedication will always drive your success.
As we move forward, I hope for more love, equality, and human connection. Modeling has given me incredible opportunities, and I wish for everyone to experience moments of growth, learning, and joy—both in fashion and in life.
