How to start modeling in Asia
One of the most important markets for new and even experienced models is Asia. Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, Taipei and other Asian markets are considered must-visit destinations for models looking to develop their skills and earn professional modeling tear sheets.

Once a model has successfully worked in Asia, she officially becomes a "professional model" and greatly increases her chances of landing a contract with a major agency in New York, Milan, Paris, London and other major markets. It is also much easier to obtain work papers and visas that allow the model to work in other countries.

Types of models working in Asia
As in any other market, modeling agencies in Asia are looking for different types of models. Agencies in Asia represent male and female models, child models, editorial and commercial models.

One of the best features of modeling agencies and clients in Asia is that they work with models who are smaller than those who typically work in the US or European markets.

The height of female models starts at 1.70 meters and male models at 1.70 meters. It is possible for models to be even shorter and still find work in Asia.

Rather than focusing solely on a model's height, agencies look at the overall package that the model presents, such as excellent skin, hair, teeth and a good personality.

Previous modeling experience not required
To work in Asia, it is not necessary to have previous modeling experience, but every little bit helps. It is recommended that you have some understanding of how to work on set with photographers and stylists, and complete at least three to four test shoots (or some local work in your home city) before trying your hand at the Asian market.

Agencies pay a travel allowance
Almost all agencies in Asia will offer to cover the cost of your airfare and accommodation. The agency will also advance the cost of your composite cards, website fees and some spending money.

Agencies are willing to advance travel costs to help you get started, and you'll be expected to pay them back once you start booking jobs. If you don't earn enough to pay the agency, the agency will take the loss and you won't have to pay them back out of your own pocket.

Agencies can also offer a model a "guarantee". This is a certain amount that is guaranteed to the model, regardless of whether they actually earn this amount or not. If a model is popular with the agency's clients or becomes a major model with good credentials and experience in markets such as New York, Paris and Milan, a model's guarantee can range from $20,000 to $30,000 or more. Top models can receive guarantees of over 150,000 US dollars for a two-month stay alone.

Parents can travel with younger models
Parents are welcome to accompany a model who is traveling for the first time or is under 18 years old. The agencies are used to this and it is never a problem. Parents have to cover their own travel and accommodation costs and can choose to stay for just a few weeks or for the whole contract.

The market is busy all year round
Some modeling markets are only good to travel to at a certain time of the year. However, the Asian market can be busy all year round. The summer months tend to be the most competitive because so many high school students travel during this time. So if you can travel in the spring, fall or winter, you may get more modeling jobs.

Two-month contracts
Typically, models are offered a two-month contract; however, how long they actually stay depends on how many bookings they receive and how clients respond to them.

How to get representation from Asian agencies
We do not recommend approaching the Asian modeling market on your own or with a good "mother agency" behind you. It is always best to have a mother agency representing you in international markets. A good mother agency will know which agencies are best suited to your particular look and how to plan and manage your career in the long term. Also, since there are legal documents, travel visas and other contracts that need to be reviewed, an experienced mother agency can be invaluable in understanding what it all means.
