Four Models Who Changed the Modeling World Forever

The 42-year-old photographer and former America’s Next Top Model judge Nigel Barker knows the fashion industry like few others. The handsome Londoner began his career in the late 1980s as a model himself, worked with renowned model agencies, and later moved behind the camera. Today, he is considered one of the most influential photographers in the industry and has worked with countless models who have shaped modern modeling.

“After more than 20 years in the industry, I’ve worked with some of the greatest women,” says Barker. For him, successful models are not just faces or runway stars, but personalities who have defined entire eras. When the New York Post asked him to select his four most influential models, the decision was anything but easy. “I didn’t just choose models who did something particularly well, but those who were the first to do things,” he explains.

Christie Brinkley – the American beauty of the 1980s

According to Barker, Christie Brinkley embodied the counterpoint to the excessive aesthetics of the 1970s. Her fresh, sporty look made her the epitome of a new, healthy ideal. As a model, she not only dominated the commercial market but also successfully bridged the gap between high fashion and mass media. With three consecutive Sports Illustrated covers and more than 500 magazine covers, she proved that models from model agencies could be both commercially and fashionably successful.

Elle Macpherson – the businesswoman of the 1990s
In the 1990s, Elle Macpherson was world-famous as “The Body,” but for Barker it was above all her entrepreneurial spirit that set her apart. She was one of the first models to understand the power behind her own name. Instead of relying exclusively on traditional model agencies, she built her own empire, founded companies, and took control of her brand. In doing so, she permanently changed how models can manage their careers in modeling.

Coco Rocha – the social media pioneer
Coco Rocha is known as the “Queen of Posing,” but according to Barker, her true influence lies in the way she used social media. She was one of the first models to strategically use digital platforms, setting new standards for model agencies and designers alike. Rocha showed that modern modeling goes far beyond the runway and photoshoots, and that a strong personal brand is now a decisive factor for success.

Naomi Campbell – the timeless icon
For Barker, Naomi Campbell is the prime example of longevity and courage. She has worked continuously as a model for more than 30 years and remains in demand with luxury labels and major model agencies to this day. As part of the legendary “Trinity,” she shaped the supermodel era while simultaneously fighting structural barriers. Her commitment to diversity paved the way for many models of color and permanently changed the industry.

These four women show that true greatness in modeling is not based on looks alone. They demonstrate how models, with personality, courage, and vision, can shape the fashion world—and the way model agencies operate—over decades.
