Polaroids: Capturing Natural Models for Model Agencies

A Polaroid today is much more than just an instant photo: it is an essential tool for both beginner and experienced models. Historically, model agencies took these shots with a Polaroid camera, and although the technology has evolved to digital, the term has remained. Polaroids allow agencies and clients to see the model in their most natural state, without embellishments, and often serve as the first step in any model’s portfolio.

The importance of naturalness cannot be overstated. Models should avoid heavy makeup and jewelry, letting their hair fall naturally. These images are then stored by the model agency and added to the model’s digital book, ready to be sent to clients to provide an authentic overview of each model’s potential.

The choice of clothing is also crucial for a good Polaroid. Simple jeans or pants, without holes or patterns, and a plain top in white, gray, or black are recommended. Heeled shoes can complete the look and help structure posture. As for lighting, it is best to photograph models in natural light on a slightly cloudy day to avoid harsh shadows and overexposure.

The background should remain neutral and light, but avoid white walls and using a flash, which can distort photo quality and exposure. Whether using a digital camera or a good-quality smartphone, make sure the images are sharp and high-resolution. A varied selection of photos allows the agency or clients to choose those that best represent the model.

For shooting, it is recommended to follow a progression: first neutral portraits, then natural smiles and side profiles, before moving to knee-length wide shots with different postures and expressions. Finally, full-body photos in portrait format should show the model from different angles and attitudes, including with hair tied back if it is long.

For any model aspiring to work with model agencies, Polaroids are a key element of the book, capturing the essence of each model and facilitating the work of all interested agencies and clients. Drawing inspiration from available pose and expression examples can also help maximize the impact of these images.
