How to Become a Successful Model: Tips from Agencies & Scouts

The most common question aspiring models receive from modeling agents and scouts is: “How do I become a model?” There is so much information in books, websites, and various forums that it can be overwhelming for new models. Here are four simple steps to help you get started in the world of modeling.

Take some basic snapshots
At first, the only photos modeling agencies and scouts need to see are some basic snapshots. Scouts are looking for a nice face photo (smiling and not smiling), left and right profile shots of your face and body, a full-length photo, and a back shot.

Wear form-fitting clothing like skinny jeans or leggings and a simple tank top or t-shirt. If you can wear a swimsuit, you should also take some photos in it – a one-piece or two-piece swimsuit is ideal.

Male models also need to show their physique. It is recommended that male models wear swim trunks or boxer briefs, or showcase jeans without a shirt in a photo. These basic shots help modeling agencies quickly recognize your potential.

Get evaluated by a professional modeling agent or scout
Most new models start their journey because family and friends say, “You should become a model,” or because they won local modeling contests. This is a good start, but not necessarily what agencies are looking for.

It is crucial to have your modeling potential evaluated by an experienced scout or agency before investing too much time or money. Professional agencies have the experience to spot and nurture talent.

Find the best modeling market for you
“Market” refers to the geographic locations where models work or the specific niche, such as fashion, commercial, plus-size, or petite models. Top models often work in multiple markets, but many successful models focus on one or two.

Even if you aren’t represented in New York or Paris yet, you could be perfect for Tokyo, Singapore, or other markets. An experienced agent can help you find the ideal market for your look.

Stay persistent
Becoming a professional model is a process that takes time. Success rarely happens overnight. Even models who seemingly became famous quickly faced many rejections.

For example, supermodel Gisele Bündchen was rejected over 40 times before signing with an agency. Stay positive: Just because an agency can’t represent you today doesn’t mean they won’t tomorrow. Patience, perseverance, and dedication are key qualities of any successful model.
