Don’t ignore Instagram, even when it’s about your portfolio. For many clients, casting directors, and every modern model agency, Instagram is often the first impression of a model. They want to see how you currently look and how active you are. Once you have new Polaroids or test shots, they should also appear on Instagram. Combine professional modeling photos with glimpses of your everyday life to show your personality and build a genuine connection with your community—a clear advantage for both clients and model agencies.
When it comes to your portfolio: less is more. Clients usually scroll quickly, so 15 to 20 strong images are more effective than an overwhelming collection. Show photos that highlight your smile, movements, and versatility as a model. More than 40 images can quickly become confusing and weaken the overall impression of your modeling profile.
One of the most important rules in modeling is: the newer, the better. If you have been working for several years, clients know many of your older jobs—and will immediately notice if they are no longer current. Focus on work from the last five years to signal to any model agency that you are in demand, relevant, and professional.
Special milestones are a conscious exception. Big jobs like runway shows for well-known designers, cover shoots, or campaigns with international brands should and can be shown. Give these highlights a clear place in your book or on your website. For models, this is the opportunity to make successes visible—but do so selectively and without exaggeration.
The layout of your portfolio is also crucial. Images are often viewed side by side, so they should harmonize. Avoid jarring style breaks and place the stronger photo on the right. Small details like eye direction can enhance the overall feeling and show that you present your modeling professionally.
Organization is equally important. Start with a current main photo, ideally a clear portrait that makes you immediately recognizable. Then follow with photos in a meaningful order: newer work first, older work later. A structured portfolio appears much more convincing to clients and model agencies.
Also, show your personality and special talents. In modeling, you never know what a casting is looking for. Whether it’s sports, music, or other skills—these elements can set you apart from other models and highlight your versatility.
Finally: request images even if others represent you. Often, you have usage rights for photos that photographers or brands have already shared online. Use these opportunities intentionally for Instagram and your online portfolio, as every image contributes to building your brand as a model.
